Benjamin Banneker Recreation Center
Have you ever been down Georgia Avenue/ Ward One and come across a swimming pool, a track, a baseball field right across the street from the Howard University’s Main Building? This facility is the Benjamin Banneker Recreation Center and offers all these facilities. Right next to the building is the Benjamin Banneker pool, with plenty of people during the day until around three or 4pm, after four, the pool is almost empty because the kids have gone home after the camps hosted by the Banneker Center are over. You can then relax in the pool from noon till 8pm on the weekdays and noon till 6pm on the weekends. The pool was newly renovated in 2007 -08.
The Benjamin Banneker Recreation also hosts a few activities during the summer such as camps for kids (ages 3-13). The Little Explorers Camp is a camp for preschool ages (3 -5). The Little Explorers Camp has many activities such as games with music, crafts, field trips, swimming and more. The kids are able to have fun with lunch provided by the camp. There is also the Discovery Camp for the older age group (ages 6-13) where the group can do fitness activities at the center, such as swimming, basketball and other recreational activities. The Discovery Camp has two more sessions that can be filled, such as the session from July 26 to August 6 and the second session from August 9 to August 20.
